BJP triumphs panchayat by-polls in Arunachal Pradesh
The ruling party BJP in Arunachal Pradesh cleaned the panchayat by-polls by acquiring 108 Gram panchayat seats.
The national people’s party (NPP) acquired five seats of Gram Panchayat, Congress and Janata Dal won three each, and Independents secured 11 seats, said to the State election commissioner, Hage Kojeen.
In the lone ZPM seat in the Kurung Kumey district, the Independent campaigner Bengia Taeyang overcame his opponent Chello Tagar by 98 votes.
On June 14, the SEC issued a presentment for holding by-polls in 130-gram panchayat seats and one ZPM seat. Only one candidate won out of 116 GP seats. The Congress won two seats, one by the JD(U) and the other by an Independent candidate ten. BJP won 101 Gram Panchayat seats.
There were 14 GP seats and one ZPM seat that was up for by-elections on July 12.
Out of 4,057 eligible voters, an estimated 84.55 per cent exercised their right to vote for 14 GP members and one ZPM. Arunachal has 8,216 GP seats and 242 Zilla Parishad member seats.
The ruling party has 188 seats in the ZPM, while the other parties have 10, 9, and 7, respectively.
The Congress has 377 seats, and the BJP has 6,378, the NPP 243, the JD(U) 159, the PPA 27, and the independents 1,046. Administrative issues and law and order problems have kept the elections to 40 GPM seats and one ZPM seat in the district.
